Language immersion, thoughtfully compared

How to compare Chinese immersion programs

A practical checklist for teaching time, course format, dates and the questions to ask before booking.

Start with your non-negotiables

Write down your available dates, destination, current Mandarin level and maximum total budget. A course with the right marketing label is still the wrong fit if it cannot place you in an appropriate class.

Compare teaching time in the same unit

Ask how many class periods you receive per week and how many minutes each period lasts. Keep supervised language instruction separate from self-study, cultural activities and breaks.

For example, ECNU publishes 29 periods of 45 minutes for its intensive semester: 21.75 clock hours. NTU CLD publishes 15 periods of 50 minutes: 12.5 clock hours. These examples describe time, not teaching quality.

Check placement and actual class size

A maximum group size, an average class size and a minimum enrollment are different facts. Ask which is being quoted, whether your group has been confirmed, and what happens if the class does not run.

Ask what happens outside class

A homestay, school-organized activity and an ordinary apartment offer different experiences. Ask whether arrangements are included, optional, guaranteed or simply referred to a third party. Set your own plan for using Mandarin outside lessons.
