Language immersion, thoughtfully compared
Find your way into Mandarin immersion.
Choose the right course structure, set a practical budget, and know what to ask before you book.
What does immersion actually include?
These listings cover in-person Mandarin courses in places where you can use Chinese beyond the classroom. A language course, homestay and cultural activity are separate arrangements. Inclusion here does not promise a Chinese-only environment or a particular learning outcome.
This edition focuses on adult-oriented study. K–12 immersion schools, online-only classes and a complete summer-camp catalogue are outside the current coverage.
Compare teaching time, not the word “intensive”
ECNU publishes 29 class periods of 45 minutes for its intensive semester: 21.75 clock hours per week. NTU CLD publishes 15 periods of 50 minutes: 12.5 clock hours. This compares scheduled time, not teaching quality or results.
Four decisions before your shortlist
- Dates and level. Ask about placement, a confirmed class at your level and the actual intake deadline.
- Writing system. Check simplified or traditional characters and the phonetic system used in your particular course. Tamkang and TCA describe traditional-character teaching in their source material.
- Time outside class. Decide how you will use Mandarin in everyday life. Ask which activities and housing options the school actually arranges.
- Full course budget. Use the approximate USD tuition to orient yourself, then check the original billing currency, period and mandatory extras. Housing and travel are separate.
